At Full Sail Labs, stories can take many forms – game levels, Minecraft builds, music tracks, short films, and more. Every once in a while, a story comes along that connects deeper than expected.
It takes a certain level of vulnerability and maturity to be able to tell the hard stories, stories of tragedy and heartache. We strive to create a safe environment where students feel comfortable telling whatever stories they’re compelled to. We provide our students the tools, opportunity, and space to allow amazing things to happen.
In the video above, Mr. Rob recounts a standout example of a student who told a profound story that let us into her life in an unexpected way.
“I opened the idea to do a “Draw My Life,” and we watched hers, and it was so poignant and heartfelt.”-Mr. Rob, Full Sail Labs facilitator
Using the “Draw My Life” format, Filmmaking student Megan talked about her love of dancing, her friends, her teachers, her family, the tragic loss of her father, and how she coped with her grief.
If you’ve ever lost a loved one, you can understand how difficult it can be to look forward to anything. Although this was an emotional time for her, Megan took the opportunity to tell her story using the “Draw My Life” platform to support and encourage others that may have gone through a similar hardship.
“You’re in a boxing ring with a 10-foot man called ‘Life’ and he will knock you down so many times. He knocked me out cold for a few weeks, but you have to choose to get up, and your heart will forever keep on beating.”-Megan, Full Sail Labs Filmmaking Student
This is a perfect example of why we do what we do. Megan seized her moment to create something incredibly powerful, and in doing so, became a storyteller.
